BIG RAPIDS — Applications are open for the sixth annual Mecosta County Youth Academy, a weeklong program hosted by the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office and the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety.
The academy is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15-19 at the Big Rapids Police Department, 435 N. Michigan Ave. The program is for boys and girls ages 12-14 who are entering seventh, eighth or ninth grade and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
The academy is designed to provide hands-on experience and mentorship, with activities that include first aid, fire safety and firearms safety, along with fitness challenges, defensive tactics, leadership and teamwork.
There is no charge to attend, and lunches are provided, according to the release. Organizers said space is limited.
Applicants must submit a short essay and one letter of recommendation from a non-family member, such as a coach or teacher. Applications are due by 4 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026.
