International Bridge sees 23% drop in January traffic

SAULT STE. MARIE — Traffic at the International Bridge connecting Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, continued to decline, according to recent data from the International Bridge Administration.

One-way traffic crossings at Soo, Michigan, totaled 54,115 in January, a nearly 23% decrease compared with January 2025.

In 2025, there were 845,713 crossings compared with just over 1.1 million in 2024.

Officials said that while they would like to see more traffic on the bridge, the decrease in revenue from tolls did not immediately affect operations, personnel or obligations to maintain the bridge in the near term.

“Our planning for our capital is decades ahead of what we need, so we are always planning for the future,” bridge Director Peter Petainen said. “Revenue-wise, we don’t watch the month to month, we are looking at the long term trends and then annually we make changes to the business plan based upon what we see.”

The International Bridge has handled nearly 107 million crossings since it opened in 1962.
