Lake City fundraiser aims to raise $20,000 for homelessness aid

LAKE CITY — The founder and chief executive of Harvest of Kindness Inc. planned to begin a winter sleep-out fundraiser Feb. 1 in front of Lake City Thrift to raise money for homelessness support and a proposed “healing farm” project.

Julie Neumann shared that the effort, called Tents of Hope, was set to start at 3 p.m. Feb. 1 at 1964 S. Morey Road in Lake City.

Neumann said she and a friend planned to start the event with no shelter supplies and earn a tent, cot and sleeping bag through donations while relying on food dropped off by neighbors.

The fundraiser aimed to show what people experiencing homelessness endure during winter in Northern Michigan while raising money to address the issue.

“Our goal is bold: $20,000.00,” Neumann said, adding that her “all-in goal” was $900,000.00 to purchase land for a farm.

According to Neumann, part of the funds would go directly to helping keep people experiencing homelessness warm and safe this winter, with remaining funds going toward a “Farm Fund” to purchase land for a farm where people could live, work and recover.

Donations can be made to Harvest of Kindness Inc. at 1964 South Morey Rd #973, Lake City, MI 49651.

Neumann listed giving options as CashApp at $HarvestOfKindness, PayPal at HarvestOfKindnessInc@gmail.com and Chime to Harvest of Kindness Inc. She also said donations could be made in person at 1964 S. Morey Road at Lake City Thrift.
