MACKINACK COUNTY— Three fire departments in Mackinac County battled a house fire for several hours Tuesday afternoon near Moran that sent one firefighter to the hospital, officials said.
Central dispatch received the call about 1:30 p.m. for a fire on the front porch of a house at 2287 Dukes Road, according to the Brevort Township Fire Department.
Brevort, Hendricks and St. Ignace fire departments responded, along with the victim services unit. Brevort Township Fire Chief Mark Peterson said that by the time crews arrived, the fire had already spread to the entire house and there was no chance to save it.
“It’s an old balloon construction house that once the fire gets into it, it goes right through it,” Peterson said. “There’s no fire stop or nothing. It’s a very old house. It’s one of the oldest houses around here.”
Peterson said the elderly homeowner escaped through the back door with help from Peterson’s friend.
Peterson said one firefighter became overexerted and was taken to the hospital before being released.
