SAULT STE. MARIE — The 57th running of the I-500 Snowmobile Endurance Race is scheduled for Saturday, with racers at the track Wednesday for time trials as they competed for pole position.
The one-mile oval in Sault Ste. Marie hosts what track officials described as a grueling snowmobile race on ice, covering 500 miles in about eight and a half hours.
Track officials said ice thickness was around 20 inches. They said cold weather over the past couple of months allowed volunteers to lay water on the track to build up the ice.
Speeds topped 110 mph at times during Round 1 Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
The final two rounds are set for Thursday. Pole position and the rest of the lineup will be announced Thursday evening, with results to air on 9&10 News at 10 and 11.
