Wellness for the Family: Dress to Impress - The Secrets to Better Salads at Home

As the new year begins, many individuals focus on healthier eating habits, which often include increasing vegetable intake and consuming more salads. Registered Dietitian with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Shanthi Appelo shared tips for healthier salad dressings.

Many store-bought salad dressings contain high levels of added sugar, sodium and other ultra-processed ingredients. So, Appelo provided two salad dressing recipes. The first dressing was a classic vinaigrette featuring olive oil and vinegar, while the second was a creamy ranch dressing made with Greek yogurt and herbs.

Additionally, Appelo provided key tips on how to toss a salad effectively. She emphasized the importance of coating the leaves evenly with dressing for balanced flavor and texture. “Make sure to use just enough dressing to enhance the salad without overpowering it,” Appelo advised.
