MANTON — Early orthodontic intervention or Healthy Start can benefit children significantly, according to Dr. Jennifer White at Brite White Dental. She highlighted that 53% of jaw size and 80% of skull size are developed by age 2, making early intervention crucial. Dr. White explains the importance of addressing orthodontic needs before adult teeth emerge because 80% of jaw size is completed by age 6.
Parents should look for signs that may indicate a need for early orthodontic intervention. Symptoms such as ear infections, snoring and even bedwetting could suggest that a child’s jaw is not developing adequately to accommodate all 32 teeth. Dr. White emphasizes that at least a nickel’s width should exist between a child’s front teeth to ensure enough space for adult teeth.
Amanda Mishler, Healthy Start parent, shared her experience, noting, “My son had had multiple rounds of ear infections. I think we had had three sets of ear tubes. He had had his tonsils, his adenoids removed.” Mishler sought help from Dr. White after discovering their child’s severe sleep issues, including mild obstructive sleep apnea. She explained, “My main concern was he wasn’t sleeping. Like he was chronically exhausted. You could tell he had bags in his eyes.” After receiving early intervention care, their child began wearing a specially designed appliance at night to help realign their mouth and they’ve seen remarkable improvements since starting treatment. “He sleeps now with his mouth shut, which is huge. He wakes up like rejuvenated in the morning and ready to go instead of just, like, moping around,” Mishler said.
Dr. White points out that early intervention can also reduce overall treatment costs. She also highlights the potential for children to perform better academically when they receive proper airway support and sleep quality.
