TRAVERSE CITY — Snowy and icy road conditions have kept tow truck crews busy across Traverse City over the past week, as drivers deal with slide-offs, crashes, and disabled vehicles.
Brickyard Towing says cold temperatures and accumulating snow have led to an increase in call volume, with many drivers losing control on slick roads or struggling with vehicles that won’t start in the cold.
Crews say winter calls can be especially challenging. Tow operators often arrive at crash scenes with limited information and must quickly assess the situation to safely remove vehicles while maintaining the flow of traffic.
Working on the side of the road during winter storms also creates safety concerns. Tow truck drivers say slowing down and giving roadside crews extra space when flashing lights are present is critical to preventing additional crashes.
Drivers are also reminded to adjust their driving habits during winter weather. Tow crews say slowing down, avoiding sudden steering movements, and braking gently can significantly reduce the risk of sliding off the road.
As winter conditions continue, tow operators encourage drivers to take extra time, drive to conditions, and stay alert when traveling through snow-covered and icy roads.
