Stay safe on snowy roads: AAA’s winter driving checklist for motorists

MICHIGAN —With hazardous conditions from snow, ice and sleet impacting travel, AAA – The Auto Club Group advises drivers to take proactive measures to ensure their safety this winter. Each year, approximately 1,300 people are killed and 116,000 are injured in crashes caused by snowy or icy pavements, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman for AAA - The Auto Club Group, highlighted the dangers that winter weather poses for drivers. “Winter driving hazards such as slick ice, snow-packed roads and reduced traction make braking and steering treacherous,” Woodland said. To mitigate these risks, AAA recommends drivers conduct thorough vehicle safety checks.

AAA’s Winter Vehicle Maintenance Checklist emphasizes several key areas for vehicle preparation during winter. Drivers should regularly check tire pressure, consider switching to winter tires for improved traction and ensure their battery is in good condition, as cold weather can significantly reduce a car battery’s efficiency. Additionally, it’s essential to keep fluid levels maintained, use winter-grade washer fluid and check antifreeze levels. Wiper blades should be replaced and all lights should be inspected for safety.

Common reasons for roadside assistance during winter weather include dead batteries, tire issues, vehicle crashes, running out of fuel and car lockouts. Cold weather can cause battery failures, which means drivers should not let their gas tanks drop below a quarter full to minimize the risk of being stranded. Checking tire tread depth is crucial as snow and ice require effective traction.

If a driver becomes stranded during winter conditions, AAA advises taking specific steps to remain safe. Woodland stated, “If your car stalls in traffic, act fast: turn on hazard lights, set the emergency brake, stay inside with doors locked and call for roadside assistance immediately.” Remaining calm and taking the right actions can be critical for survival.

Drivers are encouraged to stay inside their vehicles for warmth and safety if stranded. They should call for help while ensuring their vehicle’s visibility. Running the engine for brief periods can help keep warm, but it’s essential to ventilate the vehicle by cracking a window. Following these guidelines can greatly enhance safety during severe winter weather.
