GREEN CHARTER TWP. — Months after their multi-billion dollar battery plant development was scrapped, Gotion is arguing they’re owed damages from the Northern Michigan county they previously worked with.
In a lawsuit between Gotion and Green Charter Twp., the company claims “significant monetary damages” and says the township didn’t follow through on its commitments to the project.
The company didn’t detail a dollar amount or estimate how much they argue they’re owed in damages.
But in October, the state confirmed that the project would lose $175 million in tax incentives, $50 million of which was already distributed.
Gotion said in the filing that the company would’ve picked another state for the project without those incentives.
They also pointed to statements made by township officials who ran on opposing the project and Vice President JD Vance, who called the project a national security risk.
Gotion declined to comment further on the filing and Green Charter Twp. officials didn’t respond to a request for comment.
The judge in the case has also asked both parties if the case is now moot since the project appears to be indefinitely stalled.
Gotion is arguing against that ruling, while the township supports the dismissal of the case.
