CADILLAC — Charles Stewart II was killed during a police shooting following a traffic stop on Jan. 2, 2026, which is linked to a home invasion in Wexford County that resulted in the death of Stephen Billett.
The Cadillac Police Department stopped Stewart’s vehicle, believing it was connected to a reported stolen vehicle from the earlier home invasion.
During the stop, Stewart allegedly pointed a handgun at an officer, prompting the officer to discharge their weapon, resulting in Stewart’s death after being transported to a local hospital. The officer involved was not injured.
Investigators found Billet dead at the scene of the Wexford county home invasion. Details surrounding the home invasion—including the circumstances of Billett’s death and any potential connections between him and Stewart—remain limited.
Law enforcement officials have not disclosed whether Stewart and Billett knew each other.
During the incident, a female passenger traveling with Stewart was taken into custody for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
The investigation by the Michigan State Police into both incidents is ongoing and authorities plan to provide updates as more information becomes available. No additional suspects are believed to be at large linked to these events.
