Contractor accused of defrauding Charlevoix Church and others arrested in Arizona

CHARLEVOIX — According to the Charlevoix County prosecutor, a Charlevoix church paid contractor Alexander Donald Diegel $97,250 in 2023 for roofing services, but after Diegel completed only a fraction of the work, he stopped communicating and allegedly defrauded the church.

According to a Jan. 7 news release from the prosecutor’s office, Diegel now faces multiple felony charges in Charlevoix County for Fraudulent Use of a Building Contract Fund and Larceny By Conversion, with similar charges pending in Oscoda and Macomb counties.

The church’s financial loss led to hiring a different company to complete the roofing project, adding to the church’s expenses and financial strain. Investigations revealed that Diegel also had pending charges in Oscoda County related to a siding agreement and in Macomb County for an unfulfilled roofing agreement from 2024.

In Charlevoix County, Diegel was charged with Fraudulent Use of a Building Contract Fund and Larceny By Conversion amounting to $20,000 or more, reflecting the significant financial impact on the church due to his actions.

In Oscoda County, Diegel allegedly received a down payment for siding services but failed to provide any work after entering the agreement. The homeowner was reportedly unable to reach him thereafter, leading to financial losses.

In Macomb County, further allegations arose regarding a roofing agreement in 2024, where a homeowner similarly could not contact Diegel after providing a down payment for services.

Diegel’s actions have led to these legal consequences and a heightened scrutiny of contractors in the area, although no public comments have been made by local authorities regarding potential ramifications for other such contractors.

In December 2025, Diegel was located and arrested in Arizona, where he is currently awaiting extradition to Michigan to face the pending charges.
