BAY MILLS — Bay Mills Resort & Casino closed Sacy’s Restaurant and part of its gaming floor Tuesday, Jan. 6, after a partial roof collapse, officials said.
According to officials as of Jan. 7, no injuries have been reported.
“Our deepest gratitude goes out to the employees at Bay Mills Resort & Casino, who due to their rapid response and quick evacuation, helped ensure the safety of both guests and staff,” Bay Mills Indian Community President Whitney Gravelle told the Bay Mills Newspaper. “The gaming floor was closed only as a precaution.”
A few hours after the collapse and a structural evaluation, officials rerouted pedestrian traffic and reopened the gaming floor. Sacy’s will remain closed until repairs are complete.
Preliminary observations indicated the collapse may have been caused by damage to the roof trusses.
“At this time, the cause of the roof collapse and related broken roof trusses remains under investigation,” Gravelle told the paper. “It cannot be assumed that the roof collapse was due to snow load, as maintenance staff have been actively conducting ongoing snow shoveling and other preventative care in the area and on the roofs.”
Officials said work to repair Sacy’s will begin immediately and will not impact Bay Mills Resort & Casino’s grand opening events later this month. Safety and engineering assessments will continue as repairs are completed to ensure full structural integrity of the entire building.
“We are actively working to assess and repair the damage with hope of restoring operations as quickly as possible,” Bay Mills Resort & Casino General Manager Richard LeBlanc said in a statement. “Our main focus is to continue to offer the highest level of safety to our team members and guests while we extend the best service possible.”
Guests still have dining options, including breakfast, as Back Bay Grill & Games remains open. The comedy club scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9, has been canceled.
Officials said additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
