Michigan drivers urged to prioritize safety after over 39,000 US traffic deaths

MICHIGAN — AAA is urging drivers to prioritize safety in 2026, following a year in which more than 39,000 people died in U.S. traffic crashes. The organization emphasizes that these incidents are preventable and calls for safer driving habits among Michiganders.

In 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported more than 39,000 fatalities in traffic crashes across the United States, underscoring the urgency for improved driving safety. In light of this, AAA is challenging Michigan drivers to commit to safer habits to help reduce these alarming statistics.

Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group, remarked, “Safe driving saves lives. This year, we’re challenging Michigan drivers to choose safety every time they get behind the wheel. Let’s make 2026 the year we turn resolutions into life-saving actions. When we slow down, stay focused, drive sober and buckle up, we’re not just protecting ourselves, we’re helping create safer roads for everyone.”

According to AAA’s findings, speeding contributed to more than 11,000 fatalities in 2023, which is about 29% of all roadway deaths. The organization advocates for setting reasonable speed limits, emphasizing that adhering to these limits not only provides critical reaction time but also helps improve fuel economy and reduces vehicle wear.

Taking eyes off the road, even briefly, can lead to serious accidents. Texting while driving increases crash risk by 23 times. AAA suggests drivers minimize distractions by putting phones out of reach and preparing navigation tools before driving begins. Staying focused enhances awareness of surrounding traffic, which is crucial for safety.

Impaired driving severely hinders a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Woodland highlighted that impaired driving transforms cars into potential weapons. To combat this, AAA stresses the importance of planning ahead for safe rides home when alcohol or drugs are involved, whether through designated drivers or rideshare services.Wearing seat belts is a straightforward yet vital safety measure. They keep occupants secure during sudden stops or crashes. Woodland stated that making it a habit for all passengers to buckle up significantly enhances safety.
