Wexford-Missaukee students assist in 479% increase in food drive donations

WEXFORD COUNTY — Students at the Wexford-Missaukee Career Technical Center collected more than 26,000 cans of food for Love In the Name of Christ Cadillac as part of the National Technical Honor Society’s annual food drive.

Students from the metal fabrication and welding program and the computers, networking and electronics technology program participated in the monthlong competition, which challenged programs to collect the most donations.

The computers, networking and electronics technology program took first place, while the welding program finished second.

The food drive resulted in a 479% increase in donations compared to last year, according to the students.

Students credited their success to support and guidance from their teachers.

“It was super important to see somebody like a role model, what we were supposed to do and give us feedback and tell us this is super important for our community,” said Mattie Lafreniere, a senior.

Micah Gooden, also a senior, said participating in the drive made a meaningful impact.

“It was pretty incredible,” Gooden said. “I’m happy that we get to do something helpful for the community and then we get to help a lot of people.”

The annual food drive is organized through the National Technical Honor Society and benefits local community members served by Love In the Name of Christ Cadillac.
