Michigan storm impacts 190,000, including 1,500 in Cadillac

CADILLAC — Michigan was hit by another storm near the end of the year after a historic ice storm earlier this year, with Consumers Energy reporting that 190,000 customers have been impacted statewide since Friday.

In the Cadillac area, about 1,500 customers had power flickering in and out. Cadillac resident Barbara Rolph said her power had been going in and out since Saturday.

The Cadillac YMCA and Cherry Grove Fire and Rescue were open as warming shelters in the city but had not seen anyone come in, according to the release.

Cherry Grove Fire and Rescue said it had not responded to any incidents related to the storm, but urged people to use caution if they needed a shelter. Fire Chief Noah Knauf said the department would accommodate people who need a warm shelter and urged drivers to travel safely, keep speeds down and follow posted limits

Rolph said she was able to use a generator and a fireplace, but her family could not connect the generator to their well pump. She said that meant her family could not do dishes, flush the toilet or shower.

She said her family melted snow to do dishes.

Rolph said she was not alone and encouraged people to use the shelters available and check in on their neighbors.
