New initiative in Northern Michigan offers free rides for people in recovery

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY- Northern Michigan residents in recovery often face a simple but significant obstacle: getting to treatment, work, or support meetings. In rural communities like Charlevoix and Emmet counties, limited public transportation and the cost of rideshare services can leave people without reliable options and that gap can put recovery at risk.

SafePath Rides is a new initiative being developed to address that challenge. The program will provide free, scheduled transportation for people in recovery, helping them attend appointments, meetings, and work without worrying about how to get there.

The program was founded by Jason Miller, who drew on his own experiences in recovery. After leaving rehab, he noticed people entering transitional housing with no reliable transportation — a problem that could easily lead to missed opportunities and setbacks. SafePath Rides aims to remove that barrier and provide support in a non-judgmental, practical way.

While the service is not yet operational, Miller hopes to launch soon. The plan is to eventually expand across Northern Michigan, with multiple vehicles serving Charlevoix, Emmet, and Grand Traverse counties. The program will be free for riders and relies on community support to grow.

SafePath Rides represents a small but potentially life-changing step for people in recovery, helping them stay on the path toward stability and sobriety.
