Officer-involved shooting in Alpena Township results in suspect’s death

ALPENA — An officer-involved shooting occurred on Dec. 22 in Alpena Township, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old suspect from Alpena.

Per a Dec. 21 news release, the incident unfolded during a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle.

Officers from the Alpena Police Department and troopers from the Michigan State Police conducted the traffic stop on Grant Street near Lawn Street.

During the stop, an occupant of the vehicle produced a knife and cut an officer, prompting the officer to discharge his service weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The injured officer sustained a laceration to the hand and is currently being treated at the hospital. The two officers from the Alpena Police Department involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

The Michigan State Police Investigative Response Team and Crime Lab have been deployed to the scene to process evidence and continue the investigation into the circumstances leading up to the shooting. The ongoing inquiry seeks to determine the specific details surrounding the event and the actions taken by all parties involved.

The investigation is still underway and additional information will be released as it becomes available. According to Spl/Lt. Ashley Miller, public information officer for the Michigan State Police, more details will be shared with the local community as they emerge.
