GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Nicholas Schram has lost his appeal to be released from prison after being sentenced to two to five years for the fatal car crash that killed Sam DeKuiper, a recent college graduate of Traverse City West High School.
The incident occurred in May 2024 in Grand Traverse County.
The crash happened when Schram crossed the center line and collided head-on with DeKuiper’s vehicle. The Michigan Court of Appeals denied Schram’s appeal, stating it lacked merit, confirming his sentence for the tragic incident.
DeKuipeer was 18 years old and a participant in both football and baseball at Traverse City West High School. His death was a significant loss for the community, deeply felt by his peers and teachers.
In addition to DeKuiper, five other individuals were injured in the truck that Schram was driving during the crash. The specifics of their injuries have not been disclosed, but they added to the incident’s severity and community impact.
Currently, there are no further appeals anticipated from Schram’s side. The court’s decision will stand and he will serve the sentence imposed following the crash.
