MICHIGAN — Police agencies across Michigan are launching the ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign from December 12, 2025, to January 1, 2026, to combat impaired driving during the holiday season.
The campaign aims to address the increased risk of impaired-driving crashes during the holidays, a period known for higher alcohol consumption due to family gatherings and festive events. From 2020 to 2024, 19 people died in Michigan traffic crashes during Christmas holidays, with 47.4% of those deaths involving alcohol or drug impairment.
“Driving while being impaired by alcohol or drugs not only puts you at risk but also endangers other drivers, passengers and pedestrians,” said Alicia Sledge, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.
In 2024, Michigan recorded 1,012 fatal crashes, with 27.3% involving alcohol and 24.3% involving drugs. Roadway fatalities totaled 1,099, with 27.9% of those deaths being alcohol-involved and 24.7% drug-involved.
The Michigan State Police, county sheriff offices, and municipal police departments are increasing enforcement and messaging about the dangers of impaired driving during the campaign. Officers will be vigilant for motorists under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
In Michigan, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, but motorists can be arrested at any BAC level if an officer believes they are impaired.
The OHSP is funding a statewide media campaign to raise awareness and encourage safe and sober driving. December is also National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, established in 1981 to remind people of their responsibility in preventing impaired-driving crashes.
The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign is a critical effort to reduce deaths and serious injuries caused by impaired driving during the holiday season. “We want all Michiganders to have a great time over the holidays, but to keep everyone safe, we are also urging people to be responsible, make smart choices and plan for a sober ride home,” Sledge emphasized.
