Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office gathers 3,200 pounds of food for Salvation Army

SAULT STE. MARIE — Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office employees and volunteers spent part of their Saturday supporting the agency’s 27th annual holiday food drive.

The sheriff’s office collected frozen turkeys, hams, nonperishable food and monetary donations at Pat’s Foods, Walmart and Northern Sand and Gravel to help residents in need this Christmas season. Scott Shackelton launched the food drive in 1997 with then Sheriff Jeff Moran.

All donations benefit the Sault Ste. Marie Salvation Army.

“They do it and we get to reap the benefits from it, you know. There is a partnership between us. We do honor and respect their efforts and they have the Salvation Army mission at heart and we are very fortunate they do it,” said Eric Gilbert, core administrator at the Salvation Army.

More than 150 turkeys and hams were collected along with just over 3,200 pounds of nonperishable food and $1,500 in donations.
