Soo Locks Children’s Museum receives $50,000 for financial education exhibit

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Soo Locks Children’s Museum is one step closer to completion after several Upper Peninsula credit unions partnered to donate $50,000 toward a new exhibit focused on financial education.

Soo Co-op Credit Union, U.P. State Credit Union, Tahquamenon Area Credit Union, DeTour-Drummond Community Credit Union, 4Front Credit Union and Limestone Financial Credit Union collaborated on the contribution.

The funds will support an exhibit designed to help children explore money management and learn how credit unions operate.

Lynda Ellis, president and CEO of Soo Co-op Credit Union, said the idea to work together came naturally.

“We do work together even though we are competitors. We are in friendly competition. So I really felt they would be on board. I hope that this will be a start for others to support monetarily into the funding so we can get it open,” Ellis said.

Plans for the museum began in 2016, and it is expected to officially open in 2027.
