Santa Claus lights a 40-foot Christmas Tree at the Traverse City tree lighting ceremony

TRAVERSE CITY — Crowds were in full force on Cass and Front Street for the Traverse City tree lighting ceremony, which kicked off Saturday with fun festivities for all.

The celebration began with an array of Christmas classics, including “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”

Santa was given a special key presented by TC Mayor Amy Shamroe, who introduced Santa to the stage.

Kids had a chance to name one of Santa’s new reindeer in a quick contest. The name that Santa selected was Twinkle.

Just after 6 p.m., Santa began his countdown and used his magic key to light the 40-foot Christmas tree, which was donated by a family on Cedar Run Road.

The tree sparkled with over 4,000 lights. After the lighting ceremony, the event continued with a parade led by Santa.
