IDLEWILD — Two pillars of the Idlewild community in Lake County, killed in a car accident in Ludington, being remembered for their many contributions.
Joe Lindsey, known locally as ‘The Godfather’ of Idlewild was taking his wife Fredna to dialysis on November 10th when they hit a patch of ice, spun around, crashing into another vehicle.
Fredna was killed instantly. Joe died from his injuries three days later. The couple owned several properties, including in the historic district and several rental properties in the area.
The Lindseys were well known and well-loved and they loved Idlewild just as much.
Their daughter Melba White Newsome, one of six kids, said their passing is leaving a big void.
“They were definitely part of the community. They love what they did. They love the community, and they love the people they were in contact with. Definitely a great loss to the area and to us also,” said Newsome.
Their son, Eric Lindsey said his dad was a trailblazer.
Eric said Joe was the first African American to own a business in Ludington, buying Blue Ribbon Cleaners after working there. The store was open for about five decades before shutting down a few years ago.
Joe also owned several properties including in the historic district, like the Historic House, and Wilson’s Grocery Store which is now a social club. He also owned the Holiday House, Lindsey Park, and several rental properties in the area.
“My dad was a cornerstone. People would come talk to him and get information on what they needed to do, places here in Idlewild and even just their own personal business,” said Eric.
Joe was a captain and assistant chief for the Yates Township fire department and heavily involved in several Idlewild groups.
“My dad was a founding member of the Lake County Merry Makers. And so that’s one of the things they would do; food baskets, give kids rides and stuff, snowmobiles, motorcycles, boats, whatever. Give them some activities to do,” said Eric.
Fredna was a postmaster for more than 33 years in Idlewild and heavily involved in her church. Joe was a great mentor, business, and community leader and every stranger was soon a friend. Together they were amazing
“They were a great couple. Definitely a living example of what true love is and how to through all the trials and tribulations, all the ups and downs to really focus on what’s really important,” said Newsome.
Granddaughter Erica Tate said they will be greatly missed.
“My own brothers, my siblings and stuff, my cousins or my uncles, everybody I, you know, they really touched us all and shown us, like, what it’s like to be a family, you know, and supporting others, supporting your neighbors, being there for even strangers,” said Tate.
Funeral Services will be held at Reed City High School on December 6th.
