Whitmer pardons turkey sisters ‘Faygo’ and ‘Vernors’ ahead of Thanksgiving

LANSING — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer held her annual turkey pardoning in Lansing on Tuesday, picking two lucky turkeys to receive the high honor.

The sisters, named Faygo and Vernors, were picked by Michigan residents in a bracket-style contest.

Over 1,500 name ideas were submitted by residents around the state, and Whitmer says she’s glad that two Michigan icons took the prize.

The governor encouraged Michigan residents to give back to their communities over the holidays and to enjoy time with family, if they’re able to.

“That’s what this holiday is all about — spending time with relatives, watching the Lions, arguing over who made the best side dish, or taking a food-induced power nap,” she said. “Thanksgiving is a time for everyone, no matter where they are in the world, to come home.”

Previous honorees include Aiden Cluckinson, Dolly Pardon and Mitch E. Gander.

“I encourage everyone to find ways to give back to their community, and I hope that everyone can spend Thanksgiving with the ones they love most,” Whitmer said.
