TRAVERSE CITY — The two teens accused in the killing of a parking services worker are now charged with his murder.
The teens appeared at a video arraignment on Tuesday afternoon to hear the charges against them. They are identified as 17-year-old Eugene Thompson and 18-year-old Hunter Vanderwall.
Investigators said the two were breaking into cars at the Larry C. Hardy Parking Deck Saturday night before shooting and killing parking services worker Larry Boyd. The prosecutor’s office said Boyd confronted them when Thompson shot at Boyd five times, using a gun stolen from Missaukee County.
Both defendants were found and arrested later Saturday night, but not before police said Thompson fired several rounds at an officer.
In the courtroom, the prosecuting attorney described the act as a blatant disregard for human life, saying the suspects stole Boyd’s vape after he was shot, took hits off of it, and continued to break into cars.
All of this while Boyd was bleeding out on the parking garage floor.
A witness said they saw two masked people opening an unlocked vehicle and stealing a bag of Lego sets.
Vanderwall was seen fleeing with the bag of stolen property before being arrested.
When asked about anyone Thompson may be in contact with, he said he just wanted to talk to his mother.
During the arraignment, the judge denied bond for both teenagers.
The defendants will face trial on Dec. 9, and there will be a probable cause meeting on Dec. 2.
