Traverse City police lift shelter-in-place advisory after shooting

TRAVERSE CITY — A shelter-in-place advisory was lifted Saturday night after two suspects were taken into custody following a shooting during a foot chase, according to the Traverse City Police Department.

According to a Nov. 16 news release, officers were dispatched at 10:07 p.m. Nov. 15 to the 1200 block of E 8th St. for a report of larceny from auto. The suspects were described as wearing hoodies and masks and walking westbound from the area.

Officers later found two individuals matching that description in a parking lot in the 100 block of Munson Ave. Police said the individuals fled on foot when officers made contact.

During the chase, one suspect pulled a firearm and fired several shots at pursuing officers. No injuries were reported, though a round struck the pant leg of a Traverse City police officer.

An 18-year-old Traverse City male and a 17-year-old Traverse City male were taken into custody. Michigan State Police executed a search warrant at a local hotel room where the 17-year-old had been standing outside when he was arrested. Police said the firearm used in the shooting was recovered just outside the room and casings were found at the scene.

The 18-year-old was lodged at the Grand Traverse County Jail for larceny from auto and resisting and obstructing.

Police said there were no further public safety concerns.

The Traverse City Police Department was assisted by Michigan State Police, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Fire Department, Grand Traverse County Central Dispatch and Northwestern Michigan College Security.
