Traverse City airport expansion aims to reshape regional economy, tourism

TRAVERSE CITY – As Northern Michigan continues to attract travelers from across the country, Cherry Capital Airport is preparing to compensate for the growth in tourism.

Airport Director Kevin Klein said plans are underway to add a third terminal, a move that will reshape air travel, tourism, and the regional economy for the foreseeable future.

Over the past decade, passenger numbers at Cherry Capital Airport have seen a steady increase, specifically during the summer months. Klein said the expansion will help reduce wait times, increase passenger capacity, and improve the overall efficiency of travel to and from Traverse City.

A third terminal is expected to not only satisfy traveler demands but also attract additional airlines and routes, giving visitors more direct access to Traverse City’s thriving community.

Additionally, the expansion is expected to bring more jobs to the region throughout the construction and implementation process.

Tourism is one of the biggest contributors to economic growth in the region and additional travel opportunities will help local businesses continue to thrive.

Community input will play a key role in the process. Airport officials said they’re working closely with local leaders and residents to ensure the project aligns with environmental and infrastructure goals.

The expansion will mark one of the most significant updates in Cherry Capital Airport’s history and a major investment in the future of Northern Michigan travel.
