CHARLEVOIX — The Michigan Department of Transportation is seeking public feedback as it continues planning improvements to traffic flow, pedestrian safety and congestion on US-31 through downtown Charlevoix.
According to a Nov. 12 news release from the agency, it has implemented several upgrades in recent years, including a center left-turn lane, signal and crosswalk improvements, and safety and reliability enhancements to the bascule bridge.
MDOT is now developing additional improvements to address ongoing concerns.
An online survey will be open through Jan. 1, 2026, for residents to share updated comments and concerns.
Feedback will help MDOT identify any recent changes in conditions since its 2021 pedestrian safety study.
That study gathered public input citing issues such as poor visibility at midblock crossings, tension between drivers and pedestrians, inattentive walking, drivers not yielding, bridge-related delays, jaywalking and near misses.
MDOT plans to host a public meeting in early 2026 to present draft plans for future improvements in downtown Charlevoix.
