TRAVERSE CITY — 10 Northern Michigan workers are receiving a $5,000 boost through a new regional program dedicated to creating more affordable housing for workers throughout Northern Michigan.
The Make Your Home in Northwest Michigan initiative was launched by Traverse Connect in partnership with several local chambers of commerce throughout Northwest Michigan.
The program awards recipients direct housing assistance to help with rent, down payments, or relocation costs.
With 539 applications submitted, the organizations involved looked to address two major problems: the region’s lack of affordable housing and its shortage of workers.
The 10 recipients had all either accepted jobs or are currently employed by businesses based in Grand Traverse, Manistee, Emmet and Wexford counties.
Housing availability and affordability remain major challenges across Northern Michigan, particularly in areas where tourism and seasonal demand drive up housing prices. Leaders across the region say programs like Make Your Home in Northwest Michigan are a small but meaningful step toward addressing that issue.
The initiative also highlights the importance of collaboration between regional chambers and economic development organizations, as long-term solutions will require continued partnerships.
