Sault Ste. Marie 68-foot spruce chosen as Michigan’s state Christmas tree

SAULT STE. MARIE — A towering spruce tree that once stood in a local backyard will soon take center stage in Michigan’s capital city for the holidays.

The 68-foot-tall spruce, which grew for decades in the backyard of Sault Ste. Marie resident Linda Reid, was chosen earlier this year by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget to become the official state Christmas tree. The tree was planted by Reid’s grandparents when she was a child, and she agreed to its removal in their memory.

“I am glad they are honoring my grandparents. It’s an honor. I can’t ask for anything more,” Reid said. “This is exciting.”

Dozens of community members gathered for the tree-cutting ceremony, including local school bands, members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 180, and city dignitaries.

Sault Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Linda Hoath said the community is proud to see a local tree chosen. “This tree was put in the ground by somebody local, and it grew and grew and could be a part — so for that to be in Lansing, it’s really exciting,” she said.

The spruce will be displayed on the lawn of the Michigan State Capitol and lit during the 41st annual Silver Bells in the City celebration, scheduled for Nov. 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. in downtown Lansing.
