Tree stand safety emphasized for hunters by Michigan DNR

TRAVERSE CITY — With hunting season approaching Oct. 1, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to use caution when using tree stands.

Lt. Joe Molnar of the DNR advised hunters to always wear a full-body harness and clip into a lifeline as they enter and exit the stand. He said hunters should check their stand before heading out because it may no longer be safe.

Molnar also recommended using a tow line to lift gear such as unloaded firearms and archery equipment after getting situated. Hunters should tell someone where they will be and be prepared in case they cannot use a cellphone.

“If you don’t have the ability to have cell phone signal or, again, even if you do, it’s a great idea to be out there hunting with someone else just in case you do fall out of that stand,” Molnar said. “You have someone else in proximity who knows your hunting plan and then can come to your aid.”

He urged hunters to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when setting up a stand, including checking weight limits and proper tree size and ladder placement.

Molnar also reminded hunters that alcohol and hunting do not mix and to be aware of medications that might affect their safety.

“It’s a great time of the year to be out,” Molnar said. “As you get out, take a friend, take a kid out who hasn’t had the opportunity, really expose them to the recreational activities that you love.”
