Traverse City to close Twelfth Street for reconstruction starting Sept. 24

TRAVERSE CITY — The City of Traverse City will begin reconstructing Twelfth Street between Union and Cass streets on Sept. 24 as part of its 2025 Reconstruction Project. Work is expected to continue through Nov. 14, weather permitting.

According to a Sept. 18 news release from the city, the project includes full street reconstruction with new curbs, asphalt, bioswales and two hydrant replacements. Utility upgrades will improve sanitary sewer, watermain and storm sewer lines.

During construction, Twelfth Street will be closed between Union and Cass streets and sidewalks within the work zone will also be closed. Intermittent closures of sidewalk intersections at Cass and Union will occur, but not at the same time.

Access to driveways and nearby side streets will be maintained when possible, but temporary restrictions may be necessary during certain phases of the project. No parking will be allowed on a section of East Twelfth Street during designated times, while two-hour parking will be available at other times on weekdays.

The work is expected to generate dust and noise. Barricades and signage will be in place to direct motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.
