GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — A missing stop sign is being blamed for an accident that killed two people.
Michigan State Police say it happened around 12:05 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Miller Road and County Road 633 in Mayfield Township.
According to MSP, a white Jeep, driven by a 33-year-old woman from Northport was supposed to stop, but the sign had been damaged in a previous incident and was lying in a ditch. A gray Jeep, driven by a 47-year-old woman from Copemish, hit the white Jeep on the passenger side.
The passenger in the white Jeep, a 39-year-old man from Gaylord, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman he was riding with later died at the hospital.
The driver of the gray Jeep and her passenger were taken to Munson Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Speed and alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the crash.
