Student athletes from LSSU commemorate 9/11 with flag installation

SAULT STE. MARIE —Student athletes from Lake Superior State University and other volunteers came together to commemorate the 9/11 tragedy.

This is the 13th year West Pier Apartments has held this event where 3,000 flags are placed in an open space at the complex.

The LSSU Men’s Basketball Team has volunteered all 13 years.

This year, several members of the Lakers women’s basketball team helped out.

Despite all of the student athletes being younger than the tragedy, coaches say it’s still important for them to participate.

“We say we never forget, so to educate them a little bit. A lot of them will ask, you know, stir up some questions, and say coach, where were you when it happened, and learn a little education about it which is good thing,” said Steve Hettinga, LSSU Men’s Head Basketball Coach.

Grace Howrigon, Head LSSU Women’s Basketball Coach added, “We talk about service all the time and showing up for our community and it was really important that we came out here and we did this.”

The display will stay in place until Monday.
