TRAVERSE CITY — The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is awarding $4.75 million in brownfield redevelopment grants to five projects across the state that will create up to 306 new apartments, townhomes and condos in Ann Arbor, Bay City, Detroit, Orchard Lake Village and Traverse City.
Per an Aug. 28 news release from the department, the grants are directed to projects on contaminated properties where environmental cleanup costs would otherwise be too expensive to redevelop.
In Traverse City, EGLE is providing a $1 million grant to support the Grandview Vision redevelopment in the downtown Warehouse District. The project will convert a vacant lot on Grandview Parkway into 20 new condominiums and retail space, while a nearby Garland Street site will become retail space and a parking garage.
Grant funding will cover demolition, asbestos abatement, removal of contaminated soil and other environmental work.
The city of Traverse City and its Downtown Development Authority are contributing an additional $1 million for pedestrian-friendly infrastructure improvements in the Warehouse District.
Construction on the Grandview Vision project is expected to be completed in 2028.
