LANSING — The Michigan House Oversight Committee approved a new subpoena against Attorney General Dana Nessel Tuesday, continuing their examinations of various state agencies.
Lawmakers say they see a potential conflict of interest in two cases that were referred to Nessel’s office for potential criminal charges.
Oversight Committee chair Rep. Jay DeBoyer, (R) District 63, Clay Twp., says those instances involved either a family member of Nessel or a member of the state Democratic party.
One case also involved a referral from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office for possible campaign finance violations.
“The department has failed and or refused to produce the subpoena documents despite having had five weeks to gather and produce those documents,” DeBoyer said. “Furthermore, the department has refused to identify a date on which the documents will be produced.”
A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office says they’re aware of the original subpoena and are working on fulfilling the request.
The new subpoena requires Nessel to testify in mid-September and was approved unanimously by the bipartisan committee.
