Explore the Vibrant Colors and Purposes of Lavender at Lavender Hill Farm

When people think of lavender they typically just think, oh yeah, it’s a purple plant,” said Morgan Erickson, Tour Captain. “It smells good, but there’s so much more to it that people don’t realize. Not only are there different colors, but there’s also different purposes.”

Lavender Hill Farm in Boyne city is home to many different lavender varieties. At the farm they have English and French English hybrids because they do well in our climate.

The Lavender is planted in close together to form rows. This gives the farm walking trails and is also more aesthetically pleasing. The farms all different events like weddings, lavender dinner, concerts, painting and more.

“It isn’t common,” said Maria Savino, Intern. “I mean, maybe if you go to France, but there’s not many places where you see a lavender farm. It’s huge and it’s one of the biggest in Michigan. So, it’s 33 acres.

“All of the trails that are out here are walkable as well,” said Erickson. “We try to keep as much grass as we can. We don’t really like having too many bald spots here. and they’re also very good for the bees as well.”

The farm has 9 hives this year. They have over a million bees on he farm, but they are very docile because of how much they love lavender.

Employees on the farm also get to make meaningful connections while educating visitors.

I mean, we get interns even from out of state, they come back to either take the tours, or they have guests or family up that they want to go on the tour, and they become obsessed with some of our products as well. It is a special place.”

The farm has interns from out of state and they also have given tours to people from all over the world.

“We’ve made so many connections and just regulars here at the farm,” said Savino. “Just within the short span. I’ve worked here, so it’s really awesome. we build a really great community here.”
