CADILLAC — Wexford County Sheriff Trent Taylor said it was his office staff that could have been injured.
“We saw him on camera, walk across our front lawn, disregarding our no trespassing signs, and walked right over. Just started smashing windows,” said Taylor.
Taylor said the man was on a mission, causing about $7,000 worth of damage.
“The front office staff was impacted first because it’s throughout the front lobby and then their windows are the next ones that he hit. He works his way right to the east, smashing the windows. Glass flew in the front office. The rock went through the window and glass landed on one of the front office staff,” said Taylor.
The office staff was pretty shaken up.
“We lost a day of business, but we’re back up and operating today, and we’ll have the windows replaced as soon as possible, and everything will be back to normal,” said Taylor.
He was apprehended quickly without incident.
“One of my law enforcement sergeants was up front, and there was a deputy in a patrol car on the east of the building, and they were able to take him into custody,” said Taylor.
The sheriff says the motive is unclear. The man didn’t say much, but there are some takeaways from the scary incident.
“The law enforcement staff, the corrections staff, they have all kinds of training on a regular basis for dealing with people that are like this. But our front office staff, not so much. Not as much as needed,” said Taylor.
The suspect, Brandon Wetterman of Wexford County was arraigned Tuesday afternoon, charged with malicious destruction of the building.
He remains behind bars.
