Grand Traverse County beaches under water contact advisories following sampling results

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Some public beaches in Grand Traverse County exceeded state water quality standards following routine sampling on Wednesday, prompting the health department to issue partial or full contact advisories.

The Grand Traverse County Health Department announced that Sunset Beach is currently under a level 3 advisory.

Two other beaches — TC Volleyball Beach and West End Beach — are under Level 2 advisories, recommending no body contact at all.

The advisories were issued after testing showed the beaches exceeded acceptable limits set by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

“Rain overnight and cloudy weather, accompanied by north winds during sampling, likely contributed to these results,” said Brent Wheat, GTCHD environmental health director. “Park officials are aware of the situation, and follow-up sampling is being conducted today.”

Results from the additional sampling are expected Friday morning, June 27. Updated information will be shared through a media release, social media and the department’s website.

Other area beaches — Clinch Park, Bryant Park, Sayler Park, Acme Bayside Park, Traverse City State Park, East Bay Park and Haserot Beach — are at Level 1 and are considered safe for full-body contact.
