CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The superintendent of Lake Superior Academy is speaking out against a constant high-pitched noise affecting how they teach.
The noise emits from a newly built Bitcoin mine in Dafter Township that is 100 yards away from the school.
The Bitcoin mine is located at the intersection of Mackinac Trail and M-28 across the road from the Lake Superior Academy’s K-5 Montessori school. This is about nine miles south of Sault Ste. Marie.
The superintendent tells us the mine, consisting of six-units was turned on in early March.
Since then, the noise produced from the mine’s cooling systems is constant all hours of the day and night.
During the school day, the noise limits the time the students have class outside.
“This has forced us to stay within our classrooms, close our windows and to not enjoy nature as our curriculum is written for the outdoors, and so it has totally been an upheaval for our school,” said Superintendent Susie Schlehuber.
At the Dafter Township board meeting Tuesday, the superintendent said a representative from the Bitcoin mine told them they will take the next 60 days to try to come up with a solution to limit the noise.
