Sheriff Rich Martin tells us “He won last year’s election, and basically took office, just like I did at the first of the year. And, we were, positive, you know, hoping to move in the right direction. We had some struggles with our last prosecutor, and, we were hoping with a new prosecutor it would, put us in the right direction. And, we were hoping that, that was going to happen, but unfortunately, now that, looks like it’s not going to happen.”

The Prosecuting Association of Attorneys in Michigan tell us that Until the vacancy is filled by a new prosecutor appointed by the 27th Circuit Court, a representative from the attorney general’s office will handle the arraignments and deal with trials.

The Sheriff tells us that they were already in the process of finding someone to cover the former prosecutor, as he was possibly going on medical leave.

He adds that they are not sure why former Prosecutor Gregory Mick resigned, but he has a theory.

“So, after the new prosecutor took office, obviously there’s a learning curve, you know, with somebody who comes from, you know, the other side, defense attorney and so forth, I can guess.” The Sheriff says“ So, and I think, some of the challenges is that when you have a prosecutor, you also have to have assistant prosecutor to help as well.”

The Sheriff added that the are cautiously optimistic about the future prosecutor, saying “We’re going to be optimistic that we’re going to have an individual that is going to serve Lake County and serve the residents, professionally, efficiently, and in the best possible light. Somebody of good, character caliber and, somebody that actually wants to come here and do the job.”

We were unable to reach former prosecutor Gregory Mick for comment.
