CHIPPEWA COUNTY — A few weeks ago, police say around 260 tires were illegally dumped deep into the woods off Wilson road in Kinross Township.
After a picture of the disposed tires was posted on social media in mid-May, U.P. Tire owner Tony Brown knew he had to step up.
Thursday, his employees and those from Sav’s garage, Kinross EMS, the Michigan DNR and other volunteers battled the mosquitoes to clean up the site.
Brown said the clean-up is costly but it is something that needed to be done.
The cost to dispose of the tires legally and properly will be around five dollars per tire.
“I just think it’s really important that this kind of stuff doesn’t happen in a place in a place as pristine as this. Especially because it’s an active side-by-side trail and a snowmobile trail. I’m glad to see it cleaned up with the trail back open,” said Brown.
The Kinross Township Police Department and the DNR are investigating the illegal dumping. No word on who might be responsible.
