Hook & Hunting: DNR promotes fishing with free fishing weekend

Calling all anglers, the Michigan Department of Resources is promoting the sport of fishing this weekend.

Twice a year, the DNR offers ‘Free Fishing Weekend, where people can enjoy the sport of fishing for free.

This June 7th and 8th all fishing license fees will be waived for residents and out of state visitors.

Allowing visitors to enjoy fishing at any inland body of water or the Great Lakes

Ed Shaw at the Carl T Johnson Hunting & Fishing Center in Cadillac said there are other incentives to get out into the great outdoors this weekend.

“You don’t need a recreational passport to go visit one of our state parks like this visitor center, boat launches or recreation areas. And you don’t need an RV sticker to get out and enjoy the trails. So, it’s our one weekend out of the year that you can do all three things and get out and enjoy our outdoor recreation areas,” said Shaw.

Shaw said it’s all part of the summer free fishing weekend, held in conjunction with ‘Three Free Weekend’, where residents and nonresidents can grab a fishing rod, ride the off-road trails and visit state parks and boating access sites, all free of charge.

An ORV license or trail permit is not needed. All other ORV rules and laws still apply.
