CHIPPEWA COUNTY — A 34-year-old man from Alpena was arrested at the Soo Locks in Chippewa County, Michigan, today on an eight-count felony warrant for criminal sexual conduct.

According to a June 4 news release from the MSP, the arrest was executed by the Michigan State Police (MSP) as the suspect was working aboard the freighter M/V Kaye E. Barker. The MSP Alpena Post had initiated an investigation in 2024, which led to the felony charges issued by the Alpena County Prosecutor’s Office.

Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post and the Seventh District Fugitive Team coordinated with the captain of the Kaye E. Barker and staff from the Soo Locks to facilitate the arrest.

As the freighter tied up at the locks, troopers boarded the vessel, contacted the suspect, and took him into custody.

The arrest was unrelated to the closure of the locks on June 4, 2025. The suspect was safely transported to the Alpena County Jail, where he is being lodged.

The suspect is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
