The Upper Peninsula is under an air quality alert until midnight today following the wildfires in Canada.
While there is no air quality alert out for northern Michigan, those who live in the area should still be aware of adverse affects low quality air can have on them
Dr. Brian McComb of Munson says that those with autoimmune or lung issues should be careful during these alerts.
Dr. McComb tells us “Someone who has problems the allergies or asthma or COPD. Those people are very vulnerable. And of course, anyone with an autoimmune disease can have problems just because they don’t have the immune system available to fight off some of the infection.” he adds “So that can happen when the air quality is a little low in the lungs get inflamed. They can all lead to each other.”
It can also affect those who may be dealing with the long term effects of covid.
Dr. McComb adds that while northern Michigan is not under the advisory, people should still watch their bodies and make sure they are taking breaks as needed.
