DNR offers kids free fishing classes all summer long

CADILLAC — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is hoping to get kids hooked on fishing.

The DNR is offering free fishing classes for kids 17 and under from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Hook, line and sinker classes are offered for free at state parks and several visitor centers across Michigan every day of the week.

A fishing license is not needed, and they can even provide the fishing pole if you don’t have one.

Ed Shaw at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center in Cadillac said it’s a great way to introduce the sport to a new generation.

“First of all, we just want to get people outdoors and the excitement of catching a fish. But it also shows that if we can introduce a kid to fishing, before certain ages, that they will continue to love and hopefully grow up to fish and enjoy those recreational sports,” said Shaw.

Shaw said next weekend, June 7th and 8th is a big deal. It’s free fishing weekend, where anyone can go fishing without a license, but all regulations, rules, and size limits still apply.
