ELK RAPIDS — A new radio station is launching in Elk Rapids. Village Radio on 99.7 will officially begin broadcasting Sunday June 1.

The broadcast will be housed in the Elk Rapids Cinema and will bring local content through music, literature and conversation.

They’ll also be featuring a youth DJ internship program to give aspiring radio broadcasters experience on air.

They’re asking the community to help match a $10,000 grant to support Village Radio’s mission.

“A voice that can be heard here in Northern Michigan and our small community, We’re going to open it up to the community and DJs,” says Village Radio Station Manager Stephen McDonald. “We’ve got about 15 DJs right now.”

“I think I’m most excited for just having like a live audience and like, getting to share my music, like the music I love with everyone,” says youth DJ Leo Chen-Landvoy. “Everyone here has amazing attitude. This is like a great place. Come in, check us out. Enjoy it.”

And an event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday June 1 at the Elk Rapids Cinema to celebrate.

That event will be completely free to attend.
