Traverse City celebrates Native American history with new Cultural Marker

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City has installed another Native American Cultural Marker.

It’s all part of a project organized by the Traverse Area Historical Society. The markers acknowledge where native people lived. Each marker is made of steel and has a bilingual message in the traditional Native American language and English. Traverse City’s mayor says these markers tell the story of an important piece of the area’s history.

“we are, you know, grateful to be on this land that was stewarded by the people who were here first,” says Mayor Amy Shamroe, “and so i think it’s just a great way for us to really strengthen that connection to our history.”
