First ever “River Race of Two Cities” this weekend in Gladwin County

GLADWIN — Gladwin County will host the first-ever River Race of Two Cities.

It is making its debut over the Memorial Day Weekend, bringing together the community for a celebration of natural resources and outdoor recreation.

There will be much to do during the two day event, including a silent auction, a craft show and even live music.

The main attraction is the 12.5 mile canoe and kayak marathon along the Cedar River, from Gladwin City Park to Beaverton’s Ross Lake Park.

The Gladwin Conservation District spearheaded the effort to revitalize the Cedar River not only for the race, but also for all to enjoy for years to come.

“We want to open it up so it’s navigable for recreation for kayakers, you know, that kind of stuff. But we’re not like clearing it shore of shore. Right? We want some of that woody debris in there. It’s really good for wildlife and helps the bank withstand erosion. We started this five years ago, and we intend to keep this waterway clear and keep that available for people. The event was kind of a cherry on top for it. You know, why not celebrate it,” said Zach Bates from the Gladwin Conservation District.
